Popular Question: Is Jell-O gluten free?

on Monday, 02 May 2011. Posted in Did you know?

I get asked ALL of the time about Jell-O

JELL-O brings a lot of us back to our childhood... and those awesome commercials with Bill Cosby. I get asked quite frequently if JELL-O is gluten free, or not. Most people actually assume that is not safe to eat, myself included in the beginning days of gluten free. But, lo and behold, Kraft brand JELL-O is gluten free! When I was first diagnosed and made the switch to gluten free, I wasn't sure by reading the label alone because there are natural and artificial flavors listed.

Coca-Cola: Gluten Free Edition

on Tuesday, 22 March 2011. Posted in Did you know?

Is it... or isn't it??

I was asked by a Facebook user yesterday, the following question: "Question: It is my understanding that regular Coca Cola likely has gluten in the caramel coloring, and that the Coke company's response that is has less than 200 ppm isn't consistent with the less than 20 ppm that is required to consider a product g-free. But, there is Kosher for Passover Coke out there, and since that diet is essentially g-free, I am wondering if anyone knows if THAT Coke is g-free also?"

Chicken broth: Which is gluten free?

Clearing up the confusion on which brands are gluten free.

One of the most common questions I get asked is "Chicken broth?? What could possibly be in there that contains gluten?" This was a hard one for me to grasp too, in the beginning. But after a lot of label reading, it's quite scary. Most broths include hydrolyzed wheat gluten AND MSG. Blech! So I decided to do the homework and find out which brands are gluten free so you are prepared for the next grocery store trip.

The Florida Panthers Host Celiac Awareness Night

Stanley C. Panther goes gluten free for a night

My household is a die-hard hockey house. NHL Package on the TV and all. Barely a game missed. And even though Florida + Hockey is sort-of an oxymoron, we'll go to Panther's game if our teams (Canadians or Rangers) are playing or if we just need a hockey fix. But one thing I don't like about going to a game, though, is there is absolutely NOTHING to eat at Bank Atlantic Center that is gluten free. But the Celiac Disease Foundation South Florida Chapter is looking to change that.

EXCITING NEWS on my favorite subject... CEREAL!! Kellogg's will announce some exciting news within the next 6 months (or so). They will be debuting a line of gluten free cereals and snacks. Yep, that's right. Rice Krispies will be made with brown rice and reportedly will be certified gluten free. (Gotta keep up with General Mills).

Gluten Free continues to go mainstream

I usually grocery shop in three different places: Whole Foods, Publix and Healthy Way (our local gluten free store). Lately, I've been finding more and more options in Publix, though, which really excited me because it's MUCH more convenient for me.

Soy sauce options!

Well, this exciting bit of information came through my news feed this afternoon! A blog post was written about the new sauce on celiac-disease.com but I hadn't seen any official statement from the company, even when I googled it.

Gluten Free Pasta

on Thursday, 21 October 2010. Posted in Did you know?

We're lucky. (If, like me you are gluten-free, you are included in this we.)

These days, there are so many good gluten-free pastas that we have the ability to choose. Almost every major grocery store carries gluten-free pasta of one kind or another.

But we have the choice of one or another, we always reach for Bionaturae.

When Danny was still at Impromptu, and the entire menu was gluten-free, he always had gluten-free pasta in the back for customers who came in. He only allowed this Bionaturae gluten-free pasta in his restaurant.

It tastes good. It holds up. And unlike some of the other gluten-free pasta, this one doesn't fall apart or sag in the middle. It's from Italy, where they know how to make pasta, for gosh sakes. Why would you trust anyone else?
