Burger's on my mind.

on Friday, 12 November 2010. Posted in Recommended

It's been a burger kind of day.

I have been craving a good 'ole fashion burger for a while now. So while in Montreal today, I went to a favorite spot of mine, m:brgr. It's gourmet burgers with all of the toppings you can imagine.

I told my waiter of my allergy and moments later the owner came out to say that my food was being specially prepared for me. The regular french fries are gluten free but the sweet potato are not (so sad). My meal was sooo good and totally hit the spot! I highly recommend this local burger joint to any one in the Montreal area.

In addition to burger and fries, the coleslaw is the best in town (same owners as the famous Moishes... so if you've had their pickles and slaw then you know what I'm talkin' about).

Now, I just got a text message from my honey (who is back home in Florida) with a picture of Bubba Burgers now promoting they are, indeed, gluten free. If you have to go the frozen burger route, we're huge fan of Bubba - full fat version is better of course.

You can find Bubba Burgers in your grocery stores freezer section.

Restaurants commended, urged to pay attention to gluten intolerance

By Richard Hatch For The News-Sentinel

It is time for someone to commend a select group of local and chain restaurants for their special attention to the problem of gluten intolerance. While awareness of this group of conditions is growing, probably most readers are unfamiliar with gluten or the physical ailments associated with sensitivity to this component of wheat, rye and barley.

What a great piece on gluten and gluten allergies. The take away from the article, thank the celebrities for making our (those us with allergies) life a lot easier! With the demand of gluten free foods on the rise, being Celiac isn't so bad after all.

Lundberg Farms Couscous

on Wednesday, 03 November 2010. Posted in Recommended

Lundberg Farms recently came out with Brown Rice Couscous. I saw it on our grocery store shelves the other day and was jumping for joy. I bought the plain flavor and cooked it up in gluten free chicken broth. SO GOOD!!!! It is an awesome change up to the usual brown rice.

The next day I stocked up on boxes of it. I cannot wait to get my hands on the Mediterranean Curry flavor.

GFA thumbs up!

Nigella's G-Free Lasagna

on Tuesday, 02 November 2010.

I was super excited this morning to get a text from a friend that Nigella Lawson was on the Today Show offering up her Gluten Free Lasagna. Instead of pasta, Nigella uses polenta for her recipe. Check out the video below. I've also posted the recipe in the GFA Cookbook.

Alexia Sweet Potato Fries - Eat with caution.

on Tuesday, 02 November 2010. Posted in Beware

It was Sunday Funday and the Miami Dolphins were playing so we opted for "bar food" at home. Turkey burgers and sweet potato french fries. In the past, we've had Ore-Ida Sweet Potato Fries which are marked on the package Gluten Free.

We decided to try Alexia Foods Sweet Potato Fries this time. I didn't see any signs of gluten in the ingredients so I dug right in. A little while later the stomach was not so happy with me.

I did a little research to see what others were saying about the products and found that the same had happened to other people. The fries USED TO be marked gluten free but due to the factory conditions they are no longer considered "gluten free".

This is the only possible thing I ate that would cause the reaction so I'm chalking it up to fries made in a factory with gluten on the same assembly line. Bummer because they sure were tasty!

Candy Galore!

on Thursday, 28 October 2010.

Every time I go to the movie theatre I have to whip on my smartphone and see which candy is gluten free or not. So I've decided to make a comprehensive list of all major brands of gluten free candy (or close to all). If I left any out, let me know!

Tortillas!

Food For Life Does it Alright

These are really not bad at all. Last night, we made Burritos with these oversized Tortilla's by Food For Life. (See Recipe in our Cookbook) They are pretty similar to the good old fashion, gluten-filled tortilla's. But there is a trick, you MUST microwave them for about 30-45 seconds before wrapping it around food so they are soft enough. Otherwise, they are a bit difficult to use (hard and flake apart). I haven't found another tortilla yet like this so these will definitely make do.

I've also been using them for breakfast burritos, which I must say, are pretty darn tasty when you load that baby up!

Says Food For Life:

These unique Tortillas are the first available certified Kosher, all natural, Wheat & Gluten-Free tortillas and were specifically developed to fit the needs of individuals who are looking for Wheat & Gluten Free food options. Each tortilla is moist, delicious, easy to use, great tasting and nutritious. Specially developed to be moist, delicious and easy to use.

For the great taste of the southwest, warm tortilla before serving, stuff with pinto beans, potatoes, Longhorn or soy cheddar and add your favorite salsa.

INGREDIENTS: Whole Grain Brown Rice Flour, Filtered Water, Tapioca Flour, Safflower Oil, Rice Bran, Vegetable Gum (xanthan, cellulouse), Sea Salt.

Gluten Free Pasta

on Thursday, 21 October 2010. Posted in Did you know?

We're lucky. (If, like me you are gluten-free, you are included in this we.)

These days, there are so many good gluten-free pastas that we have the ability to choose. Almost every major grocery store carries gluten-free pasta of one kind or another.

But we have the choice of one or another, we always reach for Bionaturae.

When Danny was still at Impromptu, and the entire menu was gluten-free, he always had gluten-free pasta in the back for customers who came in. He only allowed this Bionaturae gluten-free pasta in his restaurant.

It tastes good. It holds up. And unlike some of the other gluten-free pasta, this one doesn't fall apart or sag in the middle. It's from Italy, where they know how to make pasta, for gosh sakes. Why would you trust anyone else?
