Gluten free grilled cheese??

The Melt!

Holy yumminess! For those that don’t know, I work in the advertising world with things like QR codes and Digital Signage. Last night, upon doing my usual scan of the web for industry trends I came across multiple articles about a new venture by the Flip Camera inventor, Jonathon Kaplan. He’s decided to take his technology background and pair it with everyone’s love for grilled cheese. The restaurant: The Melt. Because who doesn’t love a grilled cheese and soup?

I was jealously scrolling through some pictures of the new restaurant (which has 4 locations in San Fran and plans to open a nationwide chain in the coming months/years), when I came across one beautiful photo of the menu that reads at the bottom “Gluten free bread available upon request”. YAY! I don’t know any details of the preparation methods and likelihood of cross contamination but I’m going to assume that they are pretty cautious given the forward thinking style of the restaurant.

So how does this restaurant differ from all other restaurants? QR codes + digital signs. Hungry patrons can order their grilled cheese & soup via their mobile phones. Once the order is created, a QR code is created and you scan it into a swanky reader. Your order then appears on “Order Board” (a la digital sign) and within 2 minutes you’ll have your delicious meal. A sandwich will run you $5.95, a cup of soup $3.95 and a combo meal $8.95. If anyone gets to pay a visit, let me know!
