Attention Gluten Free Canadians: BIG NEWS!

on Tuesday, 06 March 2012. Posted in In The News

Kellogg's Gluten Free Rice Krispies Coming to Canada!

We were the first to announce (and snag our hands on) a box of gluten free Rice Krispies, about this time last year. The one thing I heard repeatedly from readers was that they wish it was available in Canada. And now it is! Kellogg's announced yesterday!

"With an increasing number of Canadians being diagnosed with Celiac Disease, experiencing sensitivity to gluten or choosing to follow a gluten-free diet, consumers are looking for more great tasting gluten-free food choices and we are filling that need," said Johanne Trudeau, Director,  Nutrition, Kellogg Canada. Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® Brown Rice gluten-free cereal is produced in a separate facility that has been making gluten-free products for nearly a decade. Each batch of product is tested to ensure its gluten-free status.

This is VERY exciting news for when I go "home" to Montreal!!

Cool Gluten Free App Alert

on Tuesday, 24 January 2012. Posted in Just Because

I stumbled upon this app today

Gluten Free? Organic? Vegan? All of the above? No problem, inBloom has got you covered. This fabulous new iPhone app is designed to help you find local restaurants and shops that are eco-friendly in your area.

Originally designed to help touring bands locate restaurants, shops and even hotels with green products and business practices, InBloom was created and developed by musicians Andy Ross (OK Go) and Eytan Oren (Eytan and the Embassy). It's an awesome app and another great way to find gluten free foods in your town, or better yet, when traveling. Watch the video below to learn more about the app from the creators, Adam and Eytan.

Chick-fil-A Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets

on Tuesday, 10 January 2012. Posted in In The News

More gluten free fast food news.

If I'm ever in a bind and need to eat ASAP, I'll look for a Chick-fil-A and get the chicken and fruit salad (really yummy). But now I can add something else to the list of emergency fast food... gluten free grilled chicken nuggets... off the kids menu!

Burger King fries are now prepared gluten free.

on Tuesday, 03 January 2012. Posted in In The News

Fast food lovers rejoice... but proceed with caution.

Burger King recently gave their french fries a makeover and the ingredients are all gluten free. They are: Potatoes, Soybean Oil, Modified Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Salt, Leavening (Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Dextrose, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate to Preserve Natural Color.

The first change to the french fries since 1998, the fries are naturally gluten free but as always, if you are going to order them, PROCEED with caution. Now, I'm not the biggest advocate of fast food but it's always good to know these things are available if you're in a bind. Just be careful of cross contamination.

So, will you try the new Burger King french fries?

Gluten Free Football!!!!!

I love football. I love going to football games and the one thing usually missing from football stadiums is gluten free goodies. The Miami Dolphins stadium doesn’t have much for those of us who are gluten intolerant so I usually go prepared but the Green Bay Packers are solving that problem for their gluten free fans. SO jealous!!

Here's what I am planning to make this weekend, right from the Rudi's website:

This recipe is a real crowd pleaser. High in protein, potassium and delicious Rudi’s Bread, There is no feeling like you are “missing out” on anything. Having everyone able to eat the same thing makes the day so much brighter. And those who were once isolated, and now included. With fine products like Rudi’s you are able to recreate dishes without the gluten!! It’s a win -win for everyone! Time to prepare: 35 mins

4 eggs

4 dashs McCormick’s vanilla extract

8 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

8 slices Rudi’s Gluten-Free Cinnamon Raisin Bread

3 bananas, sliced

4 tablespoons (Earth’s Balance ) Vegan Buttery sticks

4 teaspoons milk

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon sugar

sprinkles of cinnamon sugar

In a small mixing bowl, beat the 4 eggs, vanilla extract, milk and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon sugar.

Thinly slice bananas.

Spread 2 teaspoon peanut butter on each slice of Rudi’s Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin Bread and then 6 slices of banana in between the bread to make a sandwich.

Melt vegan butter in a frying pan on medium heat.

Quickly dip the sandwich in the egg mixture to coat but not soak it.

Cook on both sides on medium heat until lightly browned.

Dust with powdered sugar and serve.

NEW Gluten free products to hit the market!

on Friday, 26 August 2011. Posted in In The News

Gluten free products for your home.

New gluten free products to hit the market! First, a new gluten free flour being sold by Williams Sonoma. Cup4Cup Gluten Free Flour was developed exclusively for Williams-Sonoma by Chef Thomas Keller. The NYTimes wrote a review of the product earlier this week and I promptly went online to place my order. It's currently sold exclusively on Williams Sonoma website for $19.95 for a 3lb bag. I'll let you all know when I try it but would love to hear if any of you bake anything yummy with it.

The second new product comes from Gorton Seafood frozen foods. According to a press release, "Gorton’s Seafood has announced that its Grilled line of fish is now gluten free, with a variety of flavors and grilled fish species including Grilled Salmon, Grilled Tilapia, All Natural Grilled Fillets made from Alaska Pollock, and Grilled Haddock. Each fillet is expertly flame-grilled and seasoned, with the same taste millions have come to know and love, but with the added assurance that they are now gluten free. Procedures have been implemented at the production location to avoid the risk of cross-contamination, and there is ongoing monitoring and testing to ensure that Gorton’s Grilled Fish is gluten free." To read the full release, click here.

Personally, I'm not a frozen fish fan (living in S. FL kind of makes you a fish snob!) but it's good to know there are more gluten free options available!!

Gluten Free in Paris

on Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Posted in Recommended

Oooh la la ... gluten free!

The city of love. There’s just something about Paris... I don’t know what it is but I feel it every time I’m in this beautiful city. The air, the winding (and confusing) roads, the wine, the people, the energy and of course, the food. But this was my first time visiting Paris since being diagnosed with gluten intolerance. I won’t lie, my French is pretty rusty and I was very nervous about embarking on this trip.

Fool me once... Pei Wei.

on Monday, 08 August 2011. Posted in Beware

I was seriously disappointed this past weekend when for a second time in a row, there was a noodle in my gluten free chicken at Pei Wei. The noodle was actually wrapped around my Pei Wei Spicy chicken – meaning it was cooked together. I immediately told the managing chef of what I discovered and he explained to the other cooks of the seriousness. It’s great that the head chef understand but when the people doing most of the cooking don’t… that’s a huge problem. He re-made my dish and assured me he would make it himself, in a clean wok and everything. This practice should be done ALL of the time, not just when someone complains. Anyways, as much as I love my gluten free Pei Wei Spicy, as the old adage says, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” It will likely be a long time, if ever, that I return to Pei Wei. And if you decide to eat there too, then be cautious and ask to speak to the chef each and every time. Bummer!

Jackpot! Gluten free chicken nuggets.

on Thursday, 14 July 2011. Posted in Recommended

A pleasant frozen food aisle surprise!

Thanks to my trusty and well-trained gluten free spotting eyes, I found these gluten free chicken nuggets in the frozen food aisle. I was strolling down the aisle down to where the gluten free stuff normally is, and lo and behold, mixed with the regular chicken nuggets were Applegate Farms Gluten Free Chicken Fingers.

I was SO excited to try them out. Not only are the chicken fingers gluten free, but they're casein and dairy free too. (Added bonus) They're made with a blend of rice and corn flour and organic white meat chicken. I followed the instructions on the box, baked the nuggets and they surpassed my expectations. They turned out crunchy and delish. I definitely recommend these, whether for your children or for the inner kid inside of you who still craves food like this from time to time. And as you can see by the label below, they really aren't bad for you. So enjoy!
