El Jefe Luchador

Talk about hitting the jackpot. One thing I love about my friends is that they are always on the lookout for me. My non-gluten free friends are always asking about gluten free options at restaurants for me and getting back to me with the full report. Love it!

So I was VERY VERY excited when I received a text this past weekend that read, " There is a new place called El Jefe Luchador, I asked if their stuff was gluten free and they said all of their taco shells and tortillas are all corn. No wheat. They call it extreme mexican street food."

Naturally, my heart was set on visiting this place all weekend. When we walked in to this corner shop, you can't help but smile at the decor. It's definitely extreme! Think Nacho Libre-esque masks everywhere! When I approached the girl at the front to order, I informed her of my gluten restrictions and she was extremely knowledgeable and assured me that everything is 100% corn and gluten free. There is only one wheat item on the menu and it's not fried. Or goes near the corn chips, tortillas or shells.

The menu was amazing. They have everything from lime-chili grilled chicken to smokey grilled mushrooms & fried yam tacos to citrus garlic braised pork shoulder. I opted for a lime-chili taco which comes on grilled white corn tortillas, queso cotija and pico de gallo. My boyfriend had the Chorizo (house made spicy mexican pork sausage) on a taco. Then we split the White Corn Tortilla Chips with Pico De Gallo.

Everything was so tasty! The chips were thick, crunchy and not greasy with just some salt & pepper on top. The taco's were delicious. We both loved what we had. The only one downside (if you can call it that) was that they should take a page of TacoDeli's (in Austin) book and use two corn tortillas to wrap the meat in because it falls apart easily. But this is definitely my new gluten free favorite lunch joint!!!!! View the whole menu Here
